PROFILE
Journalism and Mass Communication course covers varied walks of life that have real-world applications. As one of the university's most popular majors for undergraduate students, it serves promising careers in academics, print and television media, advertising, public relations, social media and so on. Nestled in the School of Social Sciences building, the Department has been honing the skills for holistic professional development of a student.
Many an eminent journalist, communication expert and academic involved in the development of the Department and Prof K Ramakrishna Rao, the then Vice Chancellor, Andhra University ushered the bachelor of Journalism course, BJMC in 1984 on the recommendations of a committee consisting of Prof Bashiruddin (Osmania University), Prof Chintamani Mohapatra (Berhampur University), Mr. G M Bhargava (Resident Editor, Indian Express), and Mr. R Sampath (former Deputy editor, The Hindu). In 1991 M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication program was introduced. Significantly, the Department pioneers in India as it has introduced Ph D programme for the first time in Journalism and Mass Communication in 1993. Thanks to Prof K V Nagaraj, the then Head of the Department for his untiring efforts and to the benevolence of Dr. M Gopalakrishna Reddy, the then Vice-Chancellor, Andhra University for launching Ph D programme. Prof D V R Murthy, Prof C Ramakrishna, Prof P Bobby Vardhan, Dr C M Vinaya Kumar and 47 others are awarded Ph Ds in the Department. Also, Dr I S S Naresh IAS, Dr R Sampath, Former Bureau Chief, The Hindu and veteran journalist, Dr K Madhsudhan, Senior Broadcaster, All India Radio, Visakhapatnam are awarded Doctorate degrees. The Department offers Journalism course with a high level of academic rigor jelled with vital industry experts that produce career-ready graduates. Our students exhibited impressive grit as they had persevered even through the semesters of COVID-19. Our placement is 100 Percent. The Department takes pride of its students as they occupied very important positions like CEOs & Chiefs in various popular media organisations. Further, the Department has been concentrating on result oriented research and produced many Ph Ds and M. Phils. The Department has Post-Doctoral Fellows (UGC).The present faculty-Prof D V R Murthy, Prof C Ramakrishna, Dr C M Vinaya Kumar and Dr T Vijayalakshmi are all set to steer students and scholars towards purpose-driven-life and thereby fulfilling their ambitious careers.
